Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Macias had a great idea this year to raise Miraleste student’s and staff awareness of Autism.  They believed that we could participate in World Autism Day on April 2 by having the campus wear blue.  That very quickly led to the reality that most students and adults on the Miraleste campus knew very little about Autism and how it affects people that they might interact with on a daily basis.

So one day Mrs. Thompson was hiking and came across a kindness rock with a positive message and the #thekindnessrocks project written on the bottom side.   Mrs. Thompon said the message on the rock was “let’s create kindness and cultivate compassion.” The saying made her smile so she went home and researched “The Kindness Rock Project”.  From that one rock came the idea to hide rocks around the Miraleste campus in the weeks leading up to April 20 so the students and adults who found the rocks would be equipped with information about Autism

The rocks and supplies were delivered to Mrs. Macias as her part of the project was to coordinate the outstanding MIS rock artists.  The whole project was an amazing collaboration between the members of The Friendship Club, All for One and the Leadership Club.

The Kindness Rock Garden belongs to the students of Miraleste.  It is their garden, a place where they can relax and enjoy beautiful pieces of art their classmates have created.  Perhaps a student is having a bad day.  They can then stop at the garden and pick up an inspirational message that speaks to them.

As Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Thank you Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Macias for helping us change Miraleste for the better – one rock at a time.
