All incoming eighth-graders have the chance to take a language class at PEN High School as their elective. In the morning you would get up early and begin your day around six. Lauren Havens, is an eighth-grader taking Latin as her zero-period language. She says, “You really learn to value sleep.” Daytona Doherty, who currently takes Japanese at PEN, recommends setting 7 alarms and having some coffee to get up and moving for these early mornings. Class starts at 7A.M. and Daytona says that her teacher’s positivity kills off her negativity most mornings. Alexandra Paolucci describes her Latin teacher as an “overachiever” and “overqualified” and Avalon says their Latin teacher is a “dragon warrior.” Getting back to Miraleste is also an issue which for some was easily solved. For example, Alexandra, Lauren, and Katia carpool with one another to get to and from PEN. Another way of getting back and forth is to take the bus, Avalon say, “the bus driver, David, is chill.”

From eighth-grader’s perspective the classes they take aren’t that hard. Taking the class designed for high schoolers was said to be “interesting” and “not difficult”. Many of the students who were interviewed didn’t think they’d take the zero-period language class until sign-ups for eighth grade began. Everyone days that keeping up with the high schoolers isn’t hard and that there isn’t too much work. In all I’d you want to take a zero-period language you could learn about the value of sleep and a new language.
