Earlier this week, we had the privilege of interviewing one of our amazing teachers Mrs. Califano. Mrs. Califano is the Chef and Health teacher. Here are a few questions we asked her about her chef classes:

First, we asked her if she would ever consider making Chef an After School club. She said, “I have considered it a few times.”

We wanted to know what her favorite recipe was. Her response was, “I like to make Blueberry Delight, Chocolate Chip Cake, and a pumpkin dessert around the Holidays.”

There is an upcoming event in the Chef class called “Cupcake Wars”.  Cupcake wars is a competition between the five kitchens competing for the “Iron Chef Award”.  Students create their own cupcake, their own icing, and their own stand. The winners get 18 points toward Iron Chef. Competing for Iron Chef is a trimester long competition. There is always a theme for Cupcake Wars such as Furry friends or Movies, and there is always a secret  ingredient that the students have to include in their cupcake. And the last thing they do will be worth 100 points on their grade.

We asked Mrs. Califano  how long she has been teaching Chef at Miraleste and previously PVIS.  She replied, “I have been teaching Chef for 25 years. Every year it evolves into something better than the last.”

Mrs. Califano has many recipes that she likes to make. She even makes some of her own! “I make some of my own recipes. We like to add-on to recipes that already exist to make it our own,” She told us.

Next, we asked her if she preferred sweet or savory recipes for their class. She said, “A combination of both. We try to make everything different rather than the same.”

Chef classes are only a certain length of time, so you have to find recipes that you will be able to make in that time, “The classes are 55 minutes long so students work start to finish. I try to find recipes that take 20 minutes max for preparation so that we would have time to put it in the oven or cook it. But sometimes, if the recipe is too long, we might even do it for two periods.”

Lastly, we asked her if she liked cooking of baking better. “I love baking. I am a really good baker!”

We are glad we got a chance to interview Mrs. Califano who is an amazing cook and a terrific teacher.
