A recent study found that letting a baby play with an iPad may lead to speech delay. The study showed that children between ages of six months and two years spent using handheld screens are most likely to get speech delay. In an experiment, researchers tracked 900 baby’s screen times and asked the parents to record their screen times for 18 months. They looked at if the child uses sounds or words to get attention, if the child can put words together and how many words the child uses. The study found that only twenty percent of the children that spent an average of 28 minutes a day using an electronic. Every 30-minute increase of daily screen time was linked to a 49% increase of speech delay.

According to studies that research was enough. To add, the content the child is watching plays a big part in speech development and if they have a caretaker/parent watching the content with them.  Researchers recommend no screens at all other than video chatting for children under 18 months. The noise and activity can be distracting and may cause a disconnect between the child and the parent. According to Michael Robb, research director for Common Sense, states, “This in an important study in highlighting some of the potential risks associated with media use, and specifically handheld mobile devices.” Also he stated that the negative effect of handheld devices used by toddlers is that its replacing parent reaction.

In conclusion, the best result in parent interaction is to interact with your child. Replacing parent interaction with screen held devices can lead to speech delays in children. Especially children between ages 6 months and two years can be the most resulted in speech delay.
