Most language arts students at MIS have used the text book StudySync, one of the many language arts workbooks tested out this year. We started out with Collections, then Spring Board, and now we are just ending our journey with the StudySync. The district has selected StudySync to be used all of next year at the Middle School level. StudySync states that the workbook “Prepares students for college, careers, and civic life”. They also state, “Today’s students are deeply immersed in social learning. They are continually accessing and sharing information, communicating on multiple platforms, and consuming and creating diverse forms of media. In short they are becoming digital citizens. StudySync engages these digitally-connected students with media-rich learning experiences, real-world topics, and a direct read-write connection, while giving teachers flexible digital tools and engaging print resources supporting teaching, differentiation, and standards-based assessment.”

Mrs. Bucklew, a teacher who briefly taught parts of  StudySync states, “I’m happy to have a program that aligns with the new standards. I like the amount of diverse literature the students are exposed to, but the exerts are incomplete and I am concerned that students aren’t reading complete passages. I’m not a huge fan of assessments, but there are not a lot of assessments for teachers who like giving test on the material. I’m also concerned that more access to digital components won’t be of benefit.” Mrs. Hernandez states, “I really like how it is interactive and allows kids to be more interactive with their work.”

StudySync helps students analyze what they are reading, while connected their ideas to their everyday life. 8th grade students used the StudySync workbook dedicated to dealing with conflict and war. They studied things like World War II and Japanese Internment. Zoe O’Neil states, “It was sad, but I felt like we need to learn about it.” Another 8th grader, Emily Typrowicz, states, “Learning about the past was disheartening, but it will have a positive outcome by teaching us not to repeat the past.”

StudySync is dedicated to incorporating technology into learning. There are many online comprehension questions and assignments that teachers are able to give to students digitally. Students no longer have to worry about losing their homework, because the can just turn it in online. Students can also download a StudySync app, and can access StudySync off of any device.  Overall, StudySync is a great workbook that teaches students multiple learning skills.
