There are so many ways for people to be connected on the internet now a days on social media such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. But is it really okay for middle schoolers, or even elementary schoolers, to be using it? Natasha Stein states, “It’s very toxic if used incorrectly (for example, posting bad things about other people). If used correctly, you can keep in touch with people and share ideas.” There are good things and bad things about Social Media. The bad things about social media include causing fights, both physical and emotional, between friends. Leah, a seventh grader states, “Social Media is good to stay in touch with people but bad cause it can cause fights.” Many fights among friends have happened over the years of social media taking over lives. Laila Gallardo says, “It has a lot of ups and downs. Social media can hurt someone’s life, but it can also save someone’s life. We all just need to be more careful on social media.” Cyber-bullying happens more often the people would think. Everyday someone is getting hurt by another person online.

Mrs. Larson states, “I have seen social media be a wonderful thing and a curse at the same time. In terms of being great, social media allows kids to highlight their strengths, passions, and friendships. Positive posts have such a great impact on others as many people express their love and appreciation to family, friends, coaches, etc. I have also seen student comments that are supportive to those who might be criticized on social media. ‘Hey that’s not cool’ comments made by someone reading a mean post help diffuse the escalation of some situations. Social media also be a nightmare. When students use their finsta account to call out someone they are mad at or rant ‘anonymously’ even though everyone knows who they are talking about, can be embarrassing and hurtful. I also don’t like when kids post pictures or send snaps to someone who wasn’t include in their gathering. It can be so hurtful to the person who was left out! I have definitely seen an increase in the use of snapchat this year. I am not a fan of snapchat because people tend to overuse it and often snap about really minor things. I am a believe in living in the moment, not capturing the moment. I also feel snapchat is the app kids will use to film someone without their permission and post embarrassing things to people they don’t like.”

Social media can be fun, but it can also waist time. Francesca Genato states, “I spend a lot of time on social media, probably 5 hours a day”. Many surveys show that teens spend an astonishing average of nine hours a day on social media. Most teens don’t even get that much sleep in a day. Some teens stay up late and are not getting the sleep they need in a day due to social media. Teens need an average of 8 ½ hours to 9 hours. Teens are doing bad in school due to lack of sleep which in the long run is due to social media.

Not everything about social media is bad. People can use social media as a creative outlet by posting their creations and using it as a way to spread creativity. People do this by posting drawings, photos, or even paintings. Social media is also a way to stay in touch with friends, or share your own adventures. Overall, social media is a good way to stay connected, but is better in moderation.
